Drivers must be made to pay

While imposing higher annual road tax on old cars might be plausible for CO2 reduction, they seem hardly relevant in helping to reduce traffic congestion in Bangkok.

Apart from constant enforcement of existing traffic laws, other short- to medium-term measures should include overhauling the traffic-light management, which is currently poorly handled manually by the police.
Higher expressway fees, the introduction of a congestion charge when entering inner Bangkok, and lifting fuel subsidies should also be considered to encourage people to use their cars only when necessary.
Long-term measures should include the acceleration of mass-transit projects, controlling (or better, putting the brakes on) the development of high-rise buildings and shopping centres, and relocating government offices outside the capital.
