A new addition to the culinary world that revolves around Soi Thonglor or Sukhumvit 55, Maki Maki Sushi Bar & Bistro is designed to delight fans of fusion sushi. It’s the brainchild of three pals in different professions: a chef, a marketer and an interior designer with some eight years experience in the Big Apple.
Located on the third floor of No 88 Community Mall in a small sub-soi off Thonglor Soi 5, it exudes industrial New York chic and also offers diners the chance to get up close and cosy with nature in a separate air-conditioned section known as the Glass House.
Chef Yindee has also spent time in the States, working in a Japanese restaurant in Chicago. He’s brought back many of his original recipes and is also introducing new and imaginative menu items to Bangkok palates.
His seafood appetiser is called Poseidon on Fire after the mythological God of the Sea and delectable combination of scallops, crabmeat, flying fish roes, shrimps and crab stick with spicy sauce, lives up to its name by being set alight at the with table. Another appetiser is Seared Tuna with Truffle and a bite of the seared Akami tuna with French truffle oil simply melts in the mouth delivering the taste of absolute freshness.
All the way from Chicago, with a stopover in Tokyo before reaching Bangkok, comes Yindee’s BKK Maki, which blends the tastes of prime akami and hamaji sushi with avocado and cilantro. To Die for Maki features slices from the otoro, the belly of the tuna, rolled with roe from black and red flying fish and delicately wrapped with seaweed, with a quail egg added on top for a finishing touch. It is served with salmon roe and sliced green onion, creating a perfect taste.
One of the best-selling dishes is Dragon Fly, a blend of light and crispy tempura shrimps with a special sweet sauce, cream cheese and avocado. Another delicacy is Beauty and the Leaf, a combination of fresh salmon and scallop with crunchy asparagus and flying fish roe and topped with freshly cut lemon slices for a unique presentation and flavour.
Mafia Maki features salmon tempura with a spicy sauce from South America and is a recipe inspired by a chef from Ecuador, another country that is widely known for its variety of spices. It’s the perfect dish for those who need a little spice in their lives.
Fans of unagi will love Jade Dragon, which mixed roasted eel with avocado seasoned with red and black flying fish roe.
