Mo Man Xiang Ji was an overnight hit in Thailand, cruising to the top of the free-apps chart on iTunes. No wonder it struck a chord here because everyone looked cute with a comical face plastered over their own. The background-theme choices included plenty of Halloween costumes as well.
Among the many face photos available for both men and women was one for the guys that was a little nasty – it puts “you” in bed with another man. It tickled the funny bone of DJ-TV host Samaphol “Kai” Piyapongsiri, though, and he added the caption, “Help, I’m raped! I asked him for another round but he declined!”
Gay DJ Ekachai “Eaky” Ueasangkomsate dolled himself up with a woman’s face and long hair and captioned the image “Beautiful DJ Eaky”. The ladies tended to choose sexy Halloween garb. Emcee Saraichatt “Ning” Jirapate turned up as Catwoman and actress Usamanee “Kwan” Waitayanont was an alluring witch on Instagram, sending out the message “Happy Halloween!”
With all such mundane fun, of course, the app had its opps, as in opponents, especially if they found themselves being bombarded by daft photos. “Don’t tell me what application creates all these Chinese cartoon photos – I don’t want to know,” Yutthana “Pa Ted” Boon-orn of Gayray objected. Twitter had its share of people uninterested in sharing too.
Well, the IT oracles have predicted that the application’s popularity won’t last long. “Remember the Ticker app?” asked Krapook.com blogger PPK. (No, we don’t.) “This will also be gone in a day or two.”
Mother’s new day
Piyathida Worramusik, who’s won awards for her realistic portrayals of mothers in moves like “Laddaland” and “Together Won Theerak”, is feeling a bit challenged with her latest maternal role. In Nonzee Nimibutr’s “Timeline Jodmai-Khwam Songam”, she isn’t a single mum, as usual, but has a grown-up son.
And superstar Jirayu “James” Tangsrisuk is playing the son.
Piyathida admits the character is a long way from her own and thus hard to relate to. In real life she opted after marrying long-time sweetheart Napassakorn Mit-em to skip parenthood altogether. (They now share the surname Mitteeraroj.)
“But after working on the film for a while,” she says, “James made me feel like his mother, so now I feel nothing forced about loving him as my son. It just happened naturally during the course of working.”
“Timeline” was supposed to be a sequel to the tearjerker “The Letter”, which was in turn a remake of the South Korean film of the same name. And it was supposed to be about a man who dies from a serious disease, leaving behind the woman who loves him deeply. The rules of copyright changed all that, though, so the story and title are new.
“It’s still a love story, not a sad story,” says Piyathida. “Some parts will make you cry, but that’s because of the great script by Nonzee. It’s very touching. I get teary every time I read the script – not with tears of sadness but blissful tears.”
Filming in Thailand is finished and scenes are now being shot in Japan ahead of the planned release next year.
