Violence against women is deep-rooted

It's encouraging to read recent newspapers showing that the problem of violence against women in Thailand is being addressed.

But it’s not just the men who need to be taught about women’s rights. Last year after a Thai woman showed me her bones that her departed husband had broken, she told me she “dearly loved him”. How could you love a man like that, I asked? She explained that he was nice to her when he wasn’t beating her up!
And here in Thailand you have a female prime minister who did nothing when her tourism minister said it’s not rape if a man rapes the woman he had dinner with. Huh? If even the prime minister tolerates such contempt for women what can we expect from a poor, uneducated woman who thinks it was normal for her “loving” husband to break her bones?
