THE office workers on Ekamai are now used to telling friends, “Meet me at One Ounce for Onion on Soi 12.” It takes a bit of explaining but, once they get there, the alluring aromas of coffee and homemade snacks are immediately enchanting.
Nirodha Veratumpoonsawat and Varamol Chunchartprasert and two other friends run the four-month-old attraction, which is big enough to house a small coffee-roasting house called Brave Roasters as well as a cafe and a fashion boutique, which is the Onion part.
“We love coffee!” says Nirodha. “I used to open a cafe in Asoke district and our barista, Tay, owns a popular place in Chiang Mai. We wanted to open a concept store that would combine a cafe, roasting house and clothing boutique all in the same place.
They renovated an old townhouse, creating a charming bistro that suggests a rustic loft. The hardwood tables and chairs and earthy hues contribute to a relaxing, homey atmosphere.
A cup of coffee and a snack fit in nicely with a casual browse around the Onion, which offers vintage-look sunglasses and lifestyle products imported from America and Europe.
The coffee, smooth and light, is made with the Flag Bearer blend of Honey Process beans from Jomthong and the Washed beans from Pamiang Doi Saket in Chiang Mai.
For an energy boost, Nirodha recommends Egg Element, a Bt130 platter with two pan-fried eggs with a sausage, smoked bacon, asparagus, cheese and fresh bread. To wash it down there’s iced latter (Bt80) or hot latte (Bt95) or a potion called Passion Fruit, Thyme and Lemon Carbonated (Bt90).
And then there are the homemade croissants, Cherries & Choco Chip Muffins, Sea Salt Caramel Cookies and a tempting treat called Cronuts.
You can take some coffee home from Brave Roasters. The prices range from Bt410 to Bt680.
A 250-gram bag of Arabica blended with Special Preparation Washed Peaberry from Jomthong Chiang Mai has the tang of fresh lime and orange juice in the first sip, a sweet berry finish and the wholesomeness of roasted nut and peach in the aftertaste.
The Honey Process from the same farm has chocolate up front, a little berry juice acidity, more of that roasted-nut taste and a sweet floweriness. And the Washed beans from Pamiang Doi Saket follow up the chocolate and berry juice with cherry spices.
The flavour of Teka Sogestal Kirimiro washed beans from Burundi starts with chocolate caramel and moves on to sweet plum and apple juice, roasted nut and afterward a hint of spices.
