The Skytrain: from demon to saviour

Re: "When the Skytrain stopped, so did Bangkok", Editorial, December 26.

Too true, too true. However, this outpouring is quite a contrast to 18 years ago, when protesters said the Skytrain would be a dimly lit, crime-infested, pollution-causing option. Nowadays we adore the lines so much we are asking for more to cover the whole city. This convenient system has also made Bangkok a favourite destination among foreigners.
From this experience, as well described in the editorial, I will now take protests against new infrastructure like the Asoke flyover or high-speed trains with a pinch of salt. Also, academics who criticise planned infrastructure on the basis of economic viability need to factor in the intangible value of the goodwill and improved perceptions of Thailand it could bring.
