Dreaming of a Boyd Christmas

The songwriter and his friends made it worth staying in Bangkok this festive season

More than 10,000 music fans braved the traffic jams on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Highway last Saturday before taking the turn off for Muang Thong Thani to join Boyd Kosiyabong’s family event “BoyKo Family Christmas Together”.
The event, which included an outdoor fun fair, turned out to be a five-hour music marathon with a set list spanning some 50 songs all woven into a captivating detective story.
Boyd and his long-time collaborator Nop Pornchamni acted as the story tellers for the investigative tale that revolved around Moderndog’s Tanachai “Pod” Ujjin being kidnapped on Christmas Eve, four days before the show and the efforts of his maid (Puttachart “Tuitui” Pongsuchart) to dig up information concerning Pod’s disappearance.
Impact Arena was beautifully illuminated for the occasion with lights like snowflakes and a stage decorated with a snowman and Christmas tree.
The first songs, marking the beginning of the story, included Burin Boonvisut’s “Hormone”, Popetorn “Two” Soonthornyanakij’s “Tha Hak” and Saksit “Tor” Vejsupaporn’s “Mang”.
“I’m not sure when I’ll have another chance to come out on stage as there are so many artists here today. So please do as Boyd says and sing along with us as though it were the last song,” said Two.
With Pod still missing, the second set had a melancholy tone with Peerapat “Be” Thenwong’s “Pood Trong Trong”, Po Yokee Playboy’s “Tham Rai”, Ben Chalathit’s “Pleng Jak Khon Pid Wang” and Friday’s “Klub Ma”.
Although worried about Pod’s disappearance, Palmy realised the need to celebrate the festive season and much to the audience’s delight performed a series of her hits before handing over the stage to Anchalee Chongkhadeekij. As Boyd and Nop took us back to Christmas Eve, Anchalee entertained with Christmas songs.
The stage was transformed into a studio where Lipta and Nadia could be seen rehearsing. The scenery then morphed into the living room of the Sukosol family home with Boyd and Nop asking how they should respond to the blackmail letter demanding a ransom of Bt2.2 trillion for Pod’s release. Kamala Sukosol instead took the microphone and instructed them to “Live and Learn”.
After a 15-minute intermission, the curtains parted to showcase T-Rex, a duo made up of Thee Chaiyadech and Rex T-Bone. The two performed “Chao Ying” and “Home”, before the scene shifted to a warehouse. Here the “villains” of the piece sang Room 39’s “Nuang”, Mariam’s “Dao” and Knot’s “Ther Chai Mai” with Saichol Radomkij’s covering Hin Lek Fai’s “Nang Maew”, which revealed Puttachart as a spy.
Boyd and Nop next went to the police station and found two sergeants, one of them played by Scrubb who had the audience up and dancing with his renditions of “Klai” and “Thuk Yang”. Stamp, resplendent in a Police Captain uniform, was the other and had fans screaming as he sang “Man Kong Pen Khwam Rak” and “Ohm Jong Boei”. With the story over and Pod Moderndog found, the popular singer made his appearance with “Tim” and “Ta Sawang” then handed the stage to Rudklao Amratisha who slowed down the pace with “Lom Hai Jai” before jamming with Stamp on Joey Boy’s dance tracks “Loy Thalay” and “Kalam Plee”.
Screams rose to a crescendo as the first notes of Triumph Kingdom’s “Pha Ched Na” rang out and Pornpan “Joyce” Rattanamethanon, just out of prison where she served an eight-year sentence for drugs, came out on stage with Surattanawee “Bo” Suwiporn.
The music marathon came to an end with “Song Tor Khwam Rak” sung by baritone Santi Lunpei and sending out the message that Thai people should give love to each other.
