Getting creative with cans

Sponsor organises a cycling and art event to collect aluminium for the Prostheses Foundation of HRH the Princess Mother

Two thousand cyclists recently took part in the 2014 edition of the 190-kilometre day-long ride organised annually by cycling group Suan Thon to promote the environment and safe cycling.
Participants in the “Sponsor Sleek Can Recycle and Cycling” event were up and about well before dawn, turning up at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Bang Mod to register then leaving the campus for the long ride to Queen Sirikit Park in Hua Hin.
They included two-wheel stalwarts actors Pollapat “Mike” Welsh and Navin Tar, DJ Ek Krisanavarin, the national wheelchair racing team’s Pooyin Comnuan and Zeudthavee “O” Kanchanapakapong of cycling group BikeFinder.
While the riders hit the road, the university campus came alive with such eco-friendly activities as the Sponsor Sleek Can Recycle Art show, which offered creators a chance to develop art works from cans to win scholarships of Bt100,000.
The first prize went to Plai Fon Ton Nao for “Krapao Dern Thang Lor Lak” with “Krapao Sapai” by Begin Group and “Mobile Khwan” by Rak Lod Duay Ngan Silp picking up second and third prizes respectively. The Excited’s “Rot Bangkub Withayu” came in fourth and Non Stop rounded out the finalists with “Kwang”.
Even as the activities continued, the first group of cyclists arrived at Klai Kangwon Palace and paid respect to His Majesty the King, who is currently in residence there.
The 10 winning teams were then announced with Bangpu Bike, Bike Net, Boom Cycling and Suan Thon all making the cut and receiving a shield and a limited edition Sponsor Sleek Can.
Those bringing cans to the event were invited to exchange them for a t-shirt and water canteen, with the aluminium cans destined to make prosthetic legs by the Prostheses Foundation of HRH the Princess Mother.
And there were more prizes to be won too with participants whose wristbands bore the right registration number in line to take home a motorcycle or a bicycle.
