A place to 'meet and meat'

Baan Silom's latest hangout combines gastro bar with steakhouse and champagne lounge

NESTLED IN the space that once housed Niu’s jazz club’s Italian restaurant Concerto, the recently opened 661 Silom combines gastro bar with steak house.
Casual and relaxed, the two-storey restaurant is designed on the concept “Meet and Meat” with the first floor, the “Meet” section, designed as a colourful cocktail bar with tables both indoors and out. It is also home to Southeast Asia’s first Dom Perignon Champagne Lounge.
Chef and food columnist McDang is the brains behind seven Thai-style tapas that include Marinated Prawn wrapped with Chinese Noodles and sweet chilli dip (Bt195) that pair beautifully with the signature green 661 Martini (Bt350) and yellow Silom Mini (Bt295) as well as smooth champagne and wines.
“661 Silom is a fine dining steakhouse but it’s more casual that the usual steak restaurant. Customers don’t have to worry about dressing up to tuck into our premium beef and three and five-course set dinners.” says customer relation manager Parkin Rungsangtaratorn.
The “meat” section is upstairs with a decor enhanced by cowhide on the walls and a view over Baan Silom’s central square.
Three private rooms are available for parties and the main room, which seats 50, boasts an open kitchen where customers can observe chef Chatin Dienel preparing their food.
Imported beef cuts include Black Angus, flank, prime rib and brisket from Jack’s Creek Farm in Australia and Kobe beef from Japan.
There’s also beef from Switzerland’s simmenthal cattle, lamb from Ireland, salmon from Scotland, New Zealand red snapper, French butter as well as olive oil from Brazil.

Well worth trying is Dienel’s Burrata – rich Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream that’s served with heirloom tomatoes and Jamon Iberico in Panzanella sauce (Bt620).
Jack Creek’s flank is full-flavoured and tender and is served jaew dip and a small pot of mashed potatoes blended with French butter and milk for Bt790.
Do keep enough space for the chef’s Flash Frozen Berries (Bt390) that are served with a hot white chocolate sauce mixed with fresh coconut milk as well as the Belgium dark chocolate with short crust pastry and Kirsh marinated cherries and butterscotch for Bt320.
The wine cellar is well stocked with some 200 labels from around the world. Prices start at Bt250 a glass.
