Bliss by the beach in Pattaya

IF YOU’RE looking for a decent combination of hearty food, people-watching and a bit of sport on big screen on a night prowl in Pattaya, you’ll find the complete package at Tavern by the Sea at the Amari Orchid Pattaya.

The former long-time favourite Henry J Bean’s Bar & Grill is now a beach-house pub, complete with outdoor seating that’s perfect for watching the strollers along Pattaya Bay, as well as indoor tables with 15 TV screens showing any sport you prefer. Just ask the staff for the remote control for the screen closest to you. 

Make sure you arrive hungry because the food is hearty and served in large portions. A recommended dish to whet your appetite is the mouth-watering Snack Platter (Bt220) with fried chicken and mussels in a Thai-style seafood dip, among other items, and the Fisherman’s Salad (Bt360), a savoury and slightly sweet salad mix of garden lettuce, cucumber, tomato and smoked salmon.

For the real deal, get a Tavern Pizza (Bt320) with melted mozzarella cheese, rich tomato sauce, seafood galore and chilli powder. The dough is paper thin, making every mouthful an explosive treat of chunky seafood and flavours. The chilli, which helps balance the creaminess and the saltiness, makes it even more addictive.

Still hungry? Order the show-stopping Tavern Beef Burger (Bt320), which is sinfully divine. Prime Australian beef is spiced, seasoned and ground to make a thick, juicy patty, and it’s topped with crunchy lettuce and tantalising homemade burger sauce. You also get coleslaw with cabbage and fennel and a handful of chunky fries to send you off to the burger bliss. 

Leave room for dessert. The New York Cheesecake with Blueberry Compote (Bt160) is just the right portion. The moist and supple cake isn’t too cheesy, so it’s ideal for if you don’t like strong taste and smell of cheese in a dessert. Instead, it’s light and slightly creamy, and it goes wonderfully with the sharp, tangy compote. 

Tavern by the Sea has a daily food promotion that includes All-you-can-eat Burgers every Tuesday, Curry Nights every Monday and the Ribs and Wings Chow-down on Wednesdays. They’re all Bt449. On Fridays and Saturdays for Bt749, Churrasco Night offers an array of sizzling grilled meat and seafood Spanish-style, served with a full buffet of starters, side dishes and desserts.
