In Bed with the Bar

A popular boutique hotel on Koh Samet revs up the beats as darness falls

The bar, the pub and restaurant attached to the popular Bar & Bed boutique hotel on Koh Samet’s Noi Na beach is delightfully quiet during the day and throbs with life at night, making it an ideal hangout for weekenders and those spending a long time on the island
Just a few minutes from the pier, the 100-seat beachfront eatery adjacent to the pool offers a great view of the sea and of the neighbouring fishing village.
Beanbags and beach mattresses are strewn around the balcony and the counter bar in the centre morphs into a DJ station when night falls.
“Our restaurant has a relaxing and friendly vibe, which makes it a great place to hang out. We offer the same quality sounds as any pub on Soi Thonglor and our DJs spin a good mix of electronic dance music,” says general manager Anek Cheilchanthong.
Chef Joy is in charge of the kitchen and cooks up a range of Western and Thai fusion dishes including spicy smoked salmon with Thai herb salad and steamed New Zealand mussels with herbs in hotpot.
Traditional European fare such as salads, spaghetti and steak are also on offer, with the beef and lamb flown in from Australia.
“We buy our seafood straight off the boats at Baan Phe market and we make our own curry paste, so our Thai dishes have an authentic flavour,” Joy says.
We order BBQ Pork Ribs (Bt240) in barbecue sauce, Calamari (Bt160) with a cinnamon and cream sauce and Fresh Prawns (Bt200) with spicy herb and seafood sauce and fresh vegetables.
We’re also talked into trying Joy’s signature Spaghetti Pig & Prawn (Bt550), a spicy mix of smoked bacons, shrimps and chilli and finish our meal with Chocolate Lava (Bt250), a sinfully rich Belgium chocolate fondant served with vanilla ice cream.
Punters warm up for the night ahead with a stiff cocktail like Sex on the Moon (Bt260), a deceptively delicious blend of vodka, peach, triple sec, orange and cranberry juice and syrup. The Hug (Bt260) combines gin, cream de menthe, soda, syrup and lemon and the Hang Over (Bt160) is mixed with blue curacao, Baileys, Cointreau and grenadine.
