Robin Williams reminds me of Richard Cory, a character in a poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson, published in 1897.
Richard Cory was a man with everything. He was wealthy, handsome, well educated and had high place in society. When he came into town, people treated him like a king. They were thrilled when he said good morning to them. The poem ends suddenly with: “And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head.”
This is a good reminder that having high status and lots of money doesn’t guarantee happiness. But it doesn’t hurt to have them.
