Nation cartoonist Stephff continues to deliver messages with penetrating impact. Monday’s cartoon refers to the mysterious “men in black” who appeared among the red shirts in the 2010 political riots. These men had war-grade weapons and shot at the people opposite and at the Army. People were killed, yet there followed a strange silence and denial throughout Thailand. It is reasonable to assume these men were hired guns, some of them very young, and they acted from safe refuge among the red shirts.
The cartoon suggests some commanding black shirts are hypnotising the public into continued denial of this event. Make no mistake: this is a courageous graphic statement, even by the standards of Stephff himself. If you come to Bangkok, you should seek out The Nation just to see what Stephff is up to. The accusation against Thaksin Shinawatra and the red shirts is direct.
