Thailand master plastic for Asean test

National football team coach Kiatisak Senamuang is adamant his men aren't worried about playing on artificial turf at the forthcoming Asean Championship.

The 41-year-old yesterday oversaw the team’s last training session at t Bangkok Glass FC’s Leo Stadium, which also has a synthetic pitch, before they depart for Singapore today for their Group B campaign.
After the opening game against titleholders and four-time champions Singapore at the new National Stadium on Sunday, the Thais will play their last two group matches against 2010 winners Malaysia and Myanmar on artificial grass at Jalan Besar Stadium. Leading the Thai side in his first tournament since being officially appointed national coach, Kiatisak says his team need to conquer whatever conditions arise if they are to reclaim a title they last won in 2002.
“We held our last training session at the Leo Stadium because we want the players to get used to playing on an artificial pitch. But we don’t think playing on synthetic turf will be a problem anyway. If we want to prove that we’re a strong side, we need to overcome this kind of obstacle. “If we’re really strong, we should have nothing to worry about against either Malaysia or Myanmar. Our preparations have gone well over the past couple of weeks, especially the three warm-up matches, which helped build the team’s confidence.
“I’m surprised how quickly each player has adjusted and got integrated into our system. We’re now 90 per cent ready,” said the former national striker, nicknamed “Zico” by fans and Thai media. While admitting he was frustrated at the delay over a contract promised by the Thai FA, Kiatisak said the country had to come first.
“I’m a bit disappointed that I’ve not signed anything yet. But it’s not a big deal because national duty is the most important thing,” he said.
