For years we were told nothing could be done about the abuse of domestic elephants because the law only protected wild elephants. But with the new law elephant welfare activists should be allowed to make unannounced visits to the elephant camps, investigate everything from top to bottom, and find out where all those baby elephants really came from – and make sure the poachers didn’t kidnap them from the wild.
In a related matter, when I visited the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai I saw an elephant whose eyes had been poked out by her previous owner. With this new law would it now be possible to arrest the scumbag who blinded the elephant and finally bring that piece of human garbage to justice?
