Nothing wrong with Thai residency rules

Bravo to letter-writer Scott McMahon. He is the little boy who shouted, “The emperor is naked” in the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Unfortunately I cannot agree with his conclusion regarding “civilised countries”. Many of those have been invaded by foreigners who have bought real estate, resulting in prices running amok, others are misusing social security or abusing religious freedom, creating hardship for long-time nationals. As a foreigner, I respect strict laws regarding acquiring Thai nationality and believe some “civilised countries” may learn a thing or two from Thailand. If a few foreign women are able to acquire Thai nationality is sexist, it pales in comparison to the inequalities that Thai women suffer in the face of weak or non-existing laws regarding child support from the father of their children.
