DESIGNERS AND photographers wanting to chill with like-minded folk are making tracks to the newly opened 1839 Cafe and Gallery on Ladprao Wanghin Road.
The brainchild of veteran photographer Pichaya Onchavieng and three close pals, it’s located in Soi 62’s mainly residential area and is simply furnished with bleached wood tables and chairs plus shelves showcasing Pichaya’s impressive collection of old cameras.
“I wanted to open a place those working in the art and design business could congregate and share their passions,” says the photographer, adding he is planning to expand the space to include a photo studio and gallery.
For now, the offerings are simple. There’s a Floral Soda that boasts ice cubes made from rose petals and butterfly pea and what he calls his Analog set, which features diced ice made from iced Thai tea with fresh milk and honey syrup (Bt120). Another refreshing beverage is the cold Green Tea Latte, which sells for Bt65.
Coffee is very much in evidence too with espresso, Americano, cappuccino, latte and mocha made from Arabica beans from Chiang Rai going from Bt55 to Bt75.
Co-owner Natthakan Vongsavaratchaya is responsible for the food, and offers a selection of easy-to-eat dishes and pastries. They include Liver Paste (Bt80) with crispy toast, Penne Carbonara (Bt80) with sliced ham and mushroom, Caesar Salad in home-made dressing (Bt70) and the sponge Cake Mug (Bt85), which is served with chocolate ice cream and topped with whipped cream and strawberries.
“Our theme is ‘Do-It-Yourself’, so we encourage our customers to mix and match. For example the Cake Mug comes with a choice of chocolate, vanilla and green tea ice cream or, if you prefer, banana and nutella. For the Analog set, you can choose coffee, chocolate, mocha green tea or Thai tea.” Natthakan says.
