Actually, Thais are tops in the public holiday stakes

Ref: "Don't Begrudge Thai Days Off", Letters, January 24.

The travel-oriented website www.wego.com recently published research claiming that India has the most public holidays in the world, with 20 days, and that Thailand was in fifth place with 16 national holidays.
I challenge this research and I am also at odds with Barry Petersen’s claim that this year Thailand will have 16 public holidays.
By my count Thailand will have 20 days public holidays this year. They are: Jan 1 New Year’s Day; Jan 2 Bridge Public Holiday; Mar 4 Makha Bucha; Apr 6 Chakri Day; Apr 13-15 Songkran; May 1 Labour Day; May 5 Coronation Day; May 13 Royal Ploughing Ceremony; Jun 1 Visakha Bucha; Jul 30 Asaiha Bucha; Jul 31 Buddhist Lent; Aug 12 HM the Queen’s birthday and Mother’s Day: Oct 23 Chulalongkorn Day; Dec 4 Father’s Day; Dec 5 HM the King’s birthday; Dec 7 HM the King’s birthday observed; Dec 10 Constitution Day; Dec 31 New Year’s Eve.
This places Thailand at the top of Wego’s list and miles ahead of Mexico at the bottom with only seven holidays a year.
I’m not sure that being number one in these stakes is something to be proud of. But like Barry I do not begrudge Thais their holidays. After all I am retired and every day is a holiday.
