Thailand being railroaded by China

Re: "Govt may tap funds locally for rail project", Business, February 7.

The honeymoon is barely hours old and already there are cracks. The article says: “The Chinese administration offered loans for the project, but at an interest rate and with conditions Thailand reportedly deemed unacceptable.” Translation: Chinese banks want to charge high rates for loans on the project. It’s a foregone conclusion that Thailand will kowtow to whatever the Chinese request, on every level. Thai officials jumped into the project hook, line and sinker and now have no choice but to continue, for the next 55 years, to play the game according to China’s rules.
Get ready, Thailand: There will be many more unpleasant surprises with the ill-fated rail project. I could list some of the future mega-screw-ups, but why ruin the plot? As an aside, I just bought a new power tool. I chose the best and most expensive Chinese-made tool of its kind among the six types available. Less than one week later, it stopped working. I found out there was an unseen break in the power cord. The cord looks thick and strong, but inside are wimpy little 1mm wires. That’s what we expect with Chinese-made products, on all levels. They look rather good on the outside, but inside (including metal strength) they skimp on materials. Expect the same with the Chinese-made rail project.
