Get ruthless with the politicians who tore this country apart

Re: "Old players can doom reform", Editorial, February 16.

Your analysis of the factors affecting the progress of the reform pinpointed the problems right on the dot. Your subheading said it all – “deep-rooted mistrust won’t help Thailand move forward”.
But your solution for getting out of this vicious circle – that people need to understand democracy and start anew when the old rivals leave the arena – is far-fetched. This is because the rivals will never leave the arena, since their livelihood and power rest with the new constitution. The right solution would be to rid the reform process of the old players who are incapable of change. As Charles de Gaulle pointed out, “Politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.”
