There was no joke at the expense of IS victims

To: Houssam-Eldine Reda Deputy head of Mission, Embassy of Egypt, Bangkok

I would like to say that I never had the intention of making jokes at the expense of people killed by IS (Islamic State ). This is only your assumption.
Like a woman – according to her mood – can interpret in a good or bad way what her husband is telling her, bias tends to mislead the reader in what the real intent of a cartoonist was. Like most decent human beings on this planet, I am outraged by the sadistic cruelty of IS. And all the cartoons I’ve done about IS are dead serious about condemning their evil actions.
In regard to the 10 Egyptians killed, let’s also not forget the political side of it.  This tragic event is also an opportunity for autocratic coup leader General Al-Sisi to boost his legitimacy in the eyes of the West (but that doesn’t mean I am a big fan of the Muslim Brotherhood).
Air strikes against IS came at the exact moment Egypt was buying jetfighters from France. This 5-billion Euro contract shows the complete double standard of the West when it comes to condemn military coups that quell civil unrest. But unfortunately for Thailand, she doesn’t have strategic cards such as the Suez Canal or a military partnership in the war against Islamic State.
As for the Copts, let’s not also forget that this religious minority has been often left in abject poverty and oppressed by the Muslim majority under various governments of the past, including President Mubarak, so most Egyptians do not care that much for them.
I don’t believe it’s the role of a cartoonist or a newspaper to voice condolences every time something bad happens on Earth, otherwise we would end up with little time doing our job reporting and commenting.
But since you are asking, I’d like to extend my sincere condolences to all families of the 10 Egyptian Copts assassinated by IS.  In their deep sorrow, though, I’m sure they have other fish to fry than getting offended by a cartoon published in a faraway country.
Meanwhile, what’s wrong with this world that people keep getting offended by cartoons? Shouldn’t we be offended by the terrible things that humans are doing to their
fellow man instead?
