How to rescue farmers from the jaws of Big Agro

Re: "Long-term measures needed to help farmers, says FTI", Business, March 2.

I have some ideas for long-term measures for struggling Thai farmers. Try reducing their dependence on Big Agro when it comes to buying seed and chemical fertilisers. Try getting back to basics and using natural pesticides like lemongrass and chilli. How about growing organic crops, which are often more attractive to consumers? How about crop diversity and crop rotation? How about bringing in experts and sending them all over Thailand to teach sustainable farming? How about growing trees that provide shade and the ability to cultivate new, shade-dependent crops? Then the soil is less likely to be baked dry for the rest of the year. And how about teaching farmers basic finance?
