AFTER SUCCESSFULLY combining French, Italian and Japanese cuisine with good wines at their first restaurant Salt on Ari Soi 4, Antika Teparak and her friends have spread their talents and are now offering anyone wanting a quick snack rather than a full meal a range of burgers, appetisers and cocktails at their new bistro Salt Smoke on Ari Soi 1.
Housed in a small space on the ground floor of Piyawan Tower, the simple but smart eatery has a rustic loft feel with a limestone marble floor, bare cement walls and enough tables and chairs, both inside and out, to cater to 20 diners. The bar counter doubles as a pantry and is equipped with a small stove and oven.
“It’s designed in what we are calling a street cooking style. The emphasis is on easy-to-eat dishes in small portions, like the burgers in home-made buns. And of course we use only premium ingredients,” Antika says.
“This month, we’ve added salad, pasta and more cocktails to the menu,” she adds.
The burgers are certainly upmarket, with ingredients including Japanese beef, New Zealand lamb, Canadian
lobster, French foie gras and Kurobuta pork. The Cheese a Beef burger (Bt280) is filled with Japanese wagyu tenderloin, smoked mozzarella, bacon and egg. Foie gras is used instead of cheese to create a juicy texture for the WTF burger that is stuffed with wagyu tenderloin and bacon while the Kurobuta burger is, as the name implies, pork with egg, bacon and a smoky mayonnaise.
Other nibbles that go well with a cold beer include BBQ Pork Rib with home-made sauce, crispy Calamari with tartar sauce (Bt80), fish and hash, chicken wings, grilled hotate (scallop) with baby carrot, as well as smoked duck with caramelised apple.
Recommended drinks include the Himalayan Sour (Bt280), a blend of Maker’s Mark whisky, Martini Bianco and pomegranate juice and Himalayan pink salt. There are also several different beers plus red and white wine by the glass.
