Without taking sides, I admire Vint Chavala’s conduct in his duel with John Arnone. I admire the fact that he stands his ground and refuses to lower himself by telling Arnone to go home. Expatriate letter-writers add colour and stimulation to the pages of the English-language Thai press by revealing their various mentalities and intelligence. Many of their letters are educational and thought-provoking. Many others are simply ignorant, ridiculous and bombastic. Thankfully, few of the latter make it into The Nation’s Letters column. They can, however, be seen in abundance elsewhere – especially on Saturdays.
