Thanks to online social networks, the dubious treatment that one small-scale but innovative businesswoman received from a huge retail conglomerate has been exposed. While the businesswoman might lack any legal recourse, the bad publicity for the retail giant is healthy.
Though Thailand has an anti-monopoly law (the Trade Competitive Act 1999), enforcing it against conglomerates requires plenty of courage and commitment. The case highlighted by your editorial is encouraging because it shows we do not have to rely on the authorities alone. The social media can also serve as an effective warning to the big boys not to “bully” either consumers or small and medium-size traders.
