Light up if you're cycling in the dark

Somewhat surprisingly, nobody seems to have noted that both of the recent high-profile accidents involving bicyclists took place in the dark.

Without wishing to allocate responsibility, I feel that cyclists who ride in the dark should, for their own safety, ensure that their bikes are as well lit and conspicuous to traffic as possible. I would recommend larger and possibly flashing red rear lights, for example, as well as not riding more than two abreast.
They should remember that a driver following them, sometimes hindered by oncoming headlights, sometimes in driving rain, and not expecting them to be there, cannot see the small, dimly lit and possibly grimy rear lights that we often come across.
I would also be a bit sceptical about using national accident statistics to assess the scope of the problem in Bangkok. A good proportion of these must relate to the provinces, where the average cyclist appears to be unaware that bicycle lamps are available, let alone a legal requirement.
