Except for one area, this article covers the current plight of the Rohingya well. However, to blame Thailand for their suffering as stateless people from Myanmar is stretching the argument. The blame rests with Myanmar, and we are helpless to intervene. Since 2012, communal violence (possibly encouraged by the authorities there) has led to an exodus of Rohingya from Myanmar. It is unavoidable that neighbouring countries have now to bear the brunt of the displaced “boat people”. Thailand and others are awoken only by unusual occurrences, such as traffickers demanding ransom money, and the Thai government immediately dealt with this disgrace. Two uninhabited islands might now be temporarily designated as shelters. So far, have we been wrong in exacerbating the problems? On the contrary, upon learning about the crisis, we are now calling for a multinational meeting to resolve the issue. It would be nice if credit were given where it’s due.
