There is great compassion in the Northeast

Re: "Buddhism and the limits of compassion", Letters, June 5

I have seen very poor villagers in the Northeast give their last Bt10 to other villagers in greater distress.
I have seen villagers go without meals simply to provide for other villagers in distress.
There is a limit to poverty and it is called “death”, as no dead person suffers due to poverty. There is great compassion in the Northeast, probably because of Buddhism combined with poverty.
Many people of the Northeast would rather die poor than live with a guilty conscience.
