If you haven't seen 'Game of Thrones' finale yet, do not read this

You know what the problem with this digital age is, don't you? Too much information!

You know what the problem with this digital age is, don’t you? Too much information! There are things we just need to find out for ourselves. But, no, the lives of people all over the world, including Soopsip’s, were ruined this week because someone went and spoiled the ending of “Game of Thrones” for them.
Not everyone was contaminated by leaked revelations about Monday’s finale to Season 5 of the hit HBO TV series, and on Facebook there were people threatening to “unfriend” anyone who posted the spoiler info, while Twitter users wielded a similar “unfollow” axe.
It’s not like we weren’t warned. The Guardian, the British newspaper, published a lighthearted guide for fans of the show on how to avoid learning about the ending in advance. Its advice included turning off Twitter and Facebook and avoiding all human contact.
Every season of the swordandsandals (anddragons) fantasy series ends with a shock, and we all knew this one would be no exception, so viewers put a lot of effort into dodging the spoilers. Keeping your hands over your ears helped somewhat.
But of course not everyone could watch the “live” broadcast of the finale – it was on the air in the morning in Thailand – so they recorded it to watch later. And do you think they had any chance at all of avoiding the casual talk around the workplace about the big ending? The social media (God bless it, Devil take it) did its best spoil the fun, and woe befall anyone who couldn’t contain his excitement and posted the details to an unwitting audience.
Take retired Spanish football hero Luis Garcia, who garnered a raft of fresh headlines for his scrapbook by tweeting details of the shock finale even before the telecast began. “Seriously?” the former Liverpool star blurted out to his 260,000 followers. “John Snow? #GameofThrones what the [expletive]!”
The man is beloved – he won the Champion League cup, after all – or at least he was until he wrecked an entirely different kind of “Game” for everyone. “Can't believe @LuchoGarcia14 has just ruined Game of Thrones for me,” wept one fan. “What a twatty thing to do.” There were many more words of condemnation, so the next day Garcia apologised. “So sorry. Won’t happen again. Sorry for the ones who didn’t watch the episode. I’ll keep quiet next time.”
Take it easy, Luis, because, according to the Daily Express, nearly half a million other people tweeted exactly the same sort of hints and outright revelations ahead of the grand finale. One of them, @fourfourtom, who has 99,000 followers, spilled every available bean: “Jon Snow stabbed 5 times. If he survives, his next album is gonna be fire.” For reporting the fine details, Mr Tom was rewarded with a great many messages containing vulgar language and has likely lost a lot of those followers forever.
Perhaps spoiling the endings of intensely awaited TV dramas like “Game” is a hobby for some, even a curious fetish. Another UK paper, the Mirror, actually conducted a poll: “Has someone spoiled ‘Game of Thrones’ for you yet?” As of yesterday, 40 per cent of the respondents said yes.
See you next season anyway!
