Blame the car drivers - and the cops

Re: "The never-ending parade of daredevils on Thai roads", Editorial, June 20.

It’s easy to understand why our accident rate is double the global average when you see the complete lack of law enforcement on our roads. Police pick a shady spot and for a few hours target mostly motorbikes for violating laws such as using an overpass or not staying to the left.

What our accident rate doesn’t explain is that most motorcyclists involved in accidents are struck by cars. These are the cars whose drivers are chatting on their phones behind darkly tinted windows as they change lanes without signalling, who drive so close to other vehicles that the No 1 insurance claim is fender-benders due to tailgating. Tailgating is illegal in most countries.
There so many offenses for the police to choose from that I can’t understand how they can claim they don’t get enough money. There are moving violations every two seconds.
