Saving your neck: why your skin care routine shouldn't just focus on the face

A friend of mine pointed out that the back of my neck is darker than my body, and that I'm starting to develop lines on my neck. What should I do?

Although most of us invest in good facial creams and take care of our facial skin daily, the neck and decollete are often neglected when it comes to skincare. However, they are extremely vulnerable to wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Sometimes we forget that when people look at our face, they also see our neck. Therefore, the neck shouldn’t be neglected.
A youthful neck, like a pretty face, is a result of hard work and dedication. It doesn’t just happen overnight. The skin on the neck is quite delicate, and it deserves tender treatment just like your face. When washing your face with a gentle face wash, spread it to your neck. When moisturising the face, don’t forget your neck. It is also important to remember that your neck also needs sun protection, especially the back of it, which is more exposed to the sun than the front, unless your hair covers it.
Uneven skin tone caused by sun damage can be corrected with skin brightening laser treatments, such as C&B (Clear and Brilliant). C&B is a powerful skin treatment that restores skin smoothness and makes the skin brighter.
C&B applies non-ablative energy which does not destroy the top layer of the skin. It also stimulates cell production to replace damaged cells, for healthier and younger looking skin. After the treatment, you can expect to see a more even complexion, with a reduced appearance of freckles and blemishes. Results are visible after only one treatment, and become more noticeable following subsequent treatments. Four to six sessions every two to four weeks are recommended for optimal results.
The lines on the neck, also referred to as “necklace lines” and “platysmal bands”, can be caused by many factors, such as repeated movement for a prolonged period of time, genetics, improper care of skin and ageing.
Generally, the skin on the neck is drier compared to the face. Without proper moisturising, it can develop wrinkles and lines easily.
These lines may be treated with botulinum injection above and below the lines. However, it is a treatment that you must leave to a trained doctor, as injections at the wrong spots can affect your ability to swallow.
In addition to botulinum injection, some doctors may recommend using dermal filler to plump up the skin where the lines are. Dermal filler can be used to diminish the appearance of horizontal lines on your neck. This procedure is typically used for deeper creases.
Other options include using topical retinoid to reduce the appearance of the lines, or dermabrasion or microdermabrasion treatment to sand down the surface of the skin, allowing a new layer to grow in its place. Some doctors might recommend chemical peel to remove the outer layer of the skin, allowing the skin to regrow.
Whatever method you consider, it is best to consult an experienced dermatologist. In addition to giving you advice on what solution is best for your problem, you can also learn about how to prevent the problem from recurring in the future, and how to take care of your skin properly.
