BETTER KNOWN to rap fans as Joey Boy, Apisit Opasaimlikit recently started his new business of street-smart sunglasses under the brand name of “Deck Funglasses by Joey Boy.” The sunglasses have a unique style and also break all the fashion rules. The frames are distinctive, crafted by hand from the 5-ply Canadian maplewood of repurposed skateboard decks, which boast an inherently unique grain of the wood and a variety of tones.
“I have fond childhood memories of skateboarding. Everybody around me knows that when I do something, it must be fun and give happiness. That philosophy holds true for Deck’s concept Funglasses. They are unique in the selection of material, which passes through the same processes as the wood for a skateboard.
The lenses are the same quality as those used in high-end sunglasses and can be worn for outdoor sports as well as daily life,” says the 40-year-old rapper.
Joey Boy has two partners in the sunglasses business, both of them childhood friends and fellow skateboarders.
“I love skateboards and sunglasses almost as much as I love music so it made sense to combine the two. My partners are responsible for manufacturing technology standards and distribution,” said Joey Boy.
Deck Funglasses by Joey Boy come in eight street-smart styles with a 1950s flavour: Giant, Popcorn, Owl, Pool, Pool42, Sweet & Sour and Tuk Tuk. All are fitted with CR39 lenses, which boast UV protection and are light, strong and durable. Each pair is also one of a kind so customers needn’t worry about bumping into anyone sporting the same shades.
The sunglasses are available on the third floor of Siam Center, on the first floor of Mega Bangna, and at leading optical shops such as Glassaholic and Burgundy Dipper as well as online at www.DeckThailand.com and Facebook.com/DeckThailand.
