It was a pleasant surprise to read Somsak Pola’s letter lauding the junta government. The military transgression on civilian liberty is viewed as a small price to pay for peace and order. However, many would regard the view as heresy, especially those academics and old-guard politicians.
As a fellow sexagenarian, I salute him for the courage to openly state his belief. Within this one year, the military has achieved many unexpected things. But the proof of the pudding is not now but when it leaves the scene for civilians to proceed. Will it be a peaceful transition with reasonably strong and sustainable foundations for civilians? General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s frank manner to date has given me hope that he will deliver.
