Linking the Bangkok bomb and Mecca catastrophe

Re: "S Arabia probes crane collapse that killed 107," World, September 13.

No doubt there will be many different interpretations of the Mecca crane collapse, some of them rational and some certifiably weird. Here’s one of the weird ones.
Note the sequence. First, Muslim extremists (and, judging from their names, they are indeed Muslims, whatever their motives) bomb the Erawan Shrine, damaging the image of Phra Phrom (Lord Brahma, the Hindu creator-god). This image was originally installed in the belief that it would stop accidents that were occurring at a nearby construction site. After the image was consecrated, the accidents stopped.
Next, we see a spectacular meteor blazing through the daytime sky, believed in ancient times to be a harbinger of disaster.
Finally, we get the collapse of a crane at the Grand Mosque at Mecca, killing 107 Muslims. Note that the scene is a construction site. Note Phra Phrom’s historic connection to a construction site. Note that the death toll is one digit short of 108, a figure considered sacred in Buddhism and Hinduism. Note that one authority “compared the carnage to that caused by a bomb”.
In ancient times, ignorant and superstitious people would have concluded that the crane collapse was Phra Phrom’s revenge for the bombing of his shrine. If you wrote an essay about it, you could call it “Payback Time for Phra Phrom”. If George Lucas were to make a movie about it, he could call it “God Wars”.
Sound ridiculous? Of course it is. Nobody believes stuff like this anymore. This is 2015, and we are no longer ignorant and superstitious.
Are we?
