No peace for the wicked

Re: "No amnesty for on-the-run lawbreakers", Politics, October 8.

Amnesty is a way for government to allow political prisoners to remain free or go free. The subtle differences between prisoners of political conscience and criminal politicians or a demagogue taking over the country seem to be too subtle for Thai politicians to comprehend.
The Amnesty Bill that the last administration failed to pass certainly got things confused. Whoever cooked that one up deserves nothing but considerable time in quiet solitude to reflect on their misdeeds.
The government needs to be sure of who is eligible for amnesty – whether they are in the country or not. Only the guilty need amnesty. Innocent people want justice. Admission of guilt or confession of misjudgement should precede amnesty.
