Surely it’s time more Thais were outspoken about their dislikes. These might include, “I’m sick of being told what I cannot see or read” and “I’m sick of being told what I cannot say or write.” They could say, “I’m sick of hearing people who don’t agree with the government need their attitude adjusting” and “I’m sick of being told when I can buy a bottle of wine or beer.” Now we might hear “I’m sick of the possibility of being punished should an alcoholic image be seen in a photograph of me with my friends.”
Of course some degree of control must be exercised, particularly with respect to children. But that control is the responsibility of parents and teachers – not the government or censors.
Unfortunately many parents (as well as teachers) have been brought up in a system that encourages them to do as they’re told rather than think for themselves. And that, together with the fear of losing face, is the reason why many Thais will tolerate being told what they can or cannot do by a handful of people who wish to impose their own morals and beliefs on the majority.
Now is the time to stand up and tell the government you are mature and responsible enough to make your own decisions.
