Here we go again, with Dusit Thammaraks proposing that foreigners shut down their conscience and their brains when they come to live in Thailand. Apparently it’s okay for us to bring our money here, to support Thai spouses and their whole families, to run businesses, to donate to charities, and even, in many cases, pay taxes. We can express our love of this country, but when we see appalling injustice we are expected (by Thammaraks and his ilk) to close down our critical faculties.
Furthermore, on what basis does he consider he has the right to speak for all Thais on the subject of lese majeste? He says this is a Thai law established by Thai people. I beg to differ. It is a Thai law established by the political elite in order to control the populace and maintain power, and it has nothing to do with reverence for the royal family. If he would spend some time talking with ordinary Thais instead of his elitist friends, he would find that the majority loves the King but hates this law. They hate it because they see that it is used unjustly to force compliance and prevent independence of thought. Even His Majesty the King is on record as criticising this law, but Khun Dusit obviously believes that he himself knows better.
