Thai Twins Puts Thailand Upfront 2-1

[TENNIS] The doubles team of Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana easily trounced the underdogs Dineshkanthan Thangarajah and Yasitha De Silva 6-0 6-2 6-3 to put Thailand upfront 2-1 in the Davis Cup Zone Asia/Oceania Qualifying Group II tie at the Na

The Thai duo showed far more superior tennis game to outclass the Lankan rivals, the substitutes of No 1 and 2 Sharmal Dissanayake and Harshana Godamanna in just one hour  and 22 minutes. The Kingdom needs one more victory from today’s two singles rubbers to move into the next round where Thai No 1 Puriwat Chatpatcharoen will play Dissanayake and No 2 Pruchya Isarow will face Godamanna.

However Thai captain Paradorn Srichaphan is not complacent with the situation as hopes of upset over Thailand  should spark within the Lankans who opted to rest main players for the Sunday singles.

“Sri Lanka must be hoping to win both singles on Sunday as they intentionally sent young players who had no chance against our doubles team today,” said the Thai skipper.

“But I still believe that Puriwat should be readier psychologically after undergoing his first Davis Cup match on Friday. If he lives up to his level, he will have no problem to win his rubber. Even the fifth rubber is needed, our country still have the upper-hand,” the Thai captain assured Thailand’s chance to win the tie against the visitors who never beat Thailand in all five previous attempts.

Sonchat and Sanchai quickly raced through first eight games in 34 minutes due to their superior doubles expertise. Although  the visitors finally put a digit on the scoreboard for the first in the third game of the second set and posed some resistance, there was no much of a threat.

“We still felt relaxed even they broke us one game as we knew we were stronger in all aspects. It was a comfortable win for us and now Puriwat and Pruchya will do their parts by winning the remaining singles,” the twins said.

The 20-year-old Puriwat had stomach problem since on Tuesday and claimed that he lost four kilos which explained his poor form and subsequent defeat to Godamanna on Friday. But he was determined to redeem his pride against Dissanayake which is due at 10am today and can be seen on beIn Sports or True 676.

“I feel much better now and my body stops losing fluids now. The match is quite crucial as if I can make it, we will win the tie. Now I wish to win one rubber so bad in my first time as a national player,” said the Thai No 1 who had a private training with Paradorn right after the Saturday’s doubles match.

Pruchya, who yielded one point for Thailand from the Friday’s reversed singles, has never competed against Godamanna before but was adamant that the victory would belong to his side.

“Hopefully the result will be over by the Puriwat’ s match so that I don’t have to bear the pressure on my shoulders. But if my match is needed to decide the winner, I think I can handle it. What I need is to be patient and return as many ball back as possible. I will be ready in terms of psychological and physical aspects,” the Thai No 2 said.
