Blaring, brassy and gone in the blink of an eye

Re: “Don’t misrepresent a popular movement”, Letters, March 19.

While America isn’t likely to allow a maniacal dictator to do whatever he pleases once in office, the reality is that Donald Trump is condoning and encouraging violence to ensure his circus acts masquerading as campaign rallies are free of those who wish to disrupt, disturb or disagree with his bombastic platitudes. Most of those platitudes centre on a “circle the wagons around me and I will protect you” approach that seeks to build a cult of personality on empty slogans like “Make America Great Again”.
America projects strong ideals to the world and is in an enviable position of tremendous strength and prosperity, talent, relative equality and economic vibrancy.
What it cannot afford, however, is leaders who would divide the political landscape along racial and class lines via bigotry and violence if their political will is defied.
Trump is more a phenomenon than a “popular movement”, although the state of the nation is such that a majority of frustrated, mostly white, disgruntled conservatives seem attracted to his no-holds-barred hoopla. But, like his bizarrely combed-over hair, he too will soon be blown away by the wind. Don’t blink, because soon he’ll be gone.
