The video evidence appears irrefutable. After a Thai man pushes or tries to grab the son, resulting in him losing his balance and falling, the first blow struck on that night was by the British mother. She slaps a Thai man in the face (0:52 in the unedited video) – you can see his head snap back. Next the father hits a Thai man (1:12 in the unedited video).
Subsequently the Thais launch a massive escalation of violence, and their actions are both deplorable and criminal.
However, assault is assault, and the British mother and father both appear guilty. People might be confused about this, because the degree of violence used by the two parties is grievously different. But, in the eyes of the law, all appear to have committed assault.
It seems the foreign tourists should have been charged with assault and, if found guilty, sentenced to six months in jail, perhaps commuted to a fine. The Thais, because of the egregious nature of their assaults, should be given the maximum penalty.
If the assaulted family had been Burmese, would they have received such sympathy, been garlanded by representatives of the highest office in the land and waved off with smiles as they boarded their flight to Yangon?
Once again, Thailand appears to be abrogating its duty to apply its own laws evenly, regardless of origins or colour of skin.
