Unified in sorrow, let’s now follow HM’s example

I was moved by the relevance and timeliness of Stephen Young’s article “Preserving Thailand: Achievements of King Bhumibol and King Chulalongkorn” (Opinion, yesterday). We have indeed lost our guiding light. His Majesty’s wisdom and perceptiveness cut to the heart of the cancer that is threatening our nation: greed.

“The love of money is the root of all evil” is not a new idea, but our beloved King could see how “moneyism” is eroding all the values he held dear. How distressed he must have been at most of the news that appears in the papers every day of cheating, extortion and corruption.
The best way to channel our grief during this sad time is to follow in the footsteps of our “father” by embracing the values of morality, honesty and caring that he so cherished. Let us become the nation that he worked so hard to build by his selfless example. That is how we honour him and keep his memory alive.
