Southgate says England's focus is on Spain, not manager's job

Gareth Southgate said England's focus is on Tuesday's international friendly against Spain and not whether he's named the squad's permanent manager.

The game at Wembley Stadium is the last of a four-match stint Southgate was given as interim boss after replacing Sam Allardyce inSeptember.England have taken seven points from the first three games, includinga 3-0 win over Scotland on Friday, and lead their qualifying groupfor the 2018 World Cup.

"What's important is the game tomorrow," Southgate told a newsconference on Monday."I was proud we got the result on Friday, it's now a good opportunityfor the players to take a good step forward in the way we want toplay and everything else will take care of itself."Southgate said at the weekend he hoped the Football Association makea decision over the next month as he also serves as manager of England's under-21 squad.

"We've got to plan for an under-21 European finals, andunder-20s World Cup and seniors so it would be helpful to know whateveryone's work programme is," he said Monday.

"I'll get on with whatever I'm asked to do but it would be helpful toknow in which office and which programme I will work."

Captain Wayne Rooney and midfielder Adam Lallana both backed Southgate after the Scotland match and goalkeeper Joe Hart added hisapproval Monday."It's been really enjoyable," Hart said.

"It would have been difficult for anyone with the uncertainty, but he's been really cool and calm and it's transferred to the players and we feel comfortable."As for the match, Southgate said midfielder Jordan Henderson would serve as captain after Rooney missed training Monday with a minorinjury."I wouldn't start Wayne in this game, so we'll decide which route togo," he said."The key for me is I believe we have several leaders. I don't thinkwe can have just one captain."
