Trump has what’s needed to get US back on track

Re: “On China, Trump is ditching diplomacy for gunboats”, Letters, yesterday.

This headline shows a simplistic lack of understanding of Donald Trump’s policy and of fundamental human psychology. Bullies do not respect weakness and appeasement, but they do respect those who confront them and will then even offer their friendship. It’s basic sociology – being streetwise. Big boys don’t pick on big boys.
It is quite ridiculous to suggest that Trump is adopting a gunboat policy. Trump says, “We don’t want a powerful military to use, but [only] so that no one will mess with us.” Peace between nations can only exist where there is mutual respect and respect for international law, and that covers international waters like the South China Sea. Over the last eight years America’s debt has double to almost $20 trillion. Its trade deficit with China is $85 billion, while its industry has been decimated, resulting in unemployment. The US is clearly in a bad way as a result of the current system of diplomacy, protocol and international agreements. If this is allowed to continue nothing will improve, only worsen.
Fundamental change is essential. Trump has announced solutions that will reverse the degradation brought about by the current administration’s incompetence. The president-elect is not a product of academia. Trump is a man of pragmatism whose judgement is based on international experience in the tough world of the construction industry. His practical common-sense judgement has proved successful. Dealing with people from all walks of life in different countries, from politicians to bricklayers, tests all the qualities needed for responsible team leadership.
Abraham Lincoln, the greatest president of them all, had very little formal schooling. His superior intellect and wisdom were gained from experience and awareness in the real world. “Rebuilding America’s defences” means just that. The key word is “defences” – defending its constitution, borders, its culture, its people and sovereignty. What can be more reasonable, and more noble?
