Guns don’t have brains

Re: “Modern rapid-fire weapons and gun control,” Letters, yesterday.

The writer, in his customary obscure verbosity, completely fails to grasp the fundamental points on the firearms issue.
Guns don’t have brains. Guns do not pull their own triggers – people do that for them. People are responsible for homicides, not guns.
The myopic claim that banning guns would prevent homicide shows a complete lack of understanding of reality. The latest weapon of mass homicide is a large truck. Stationary with a dead engine, any vehicle is quite harmless. But when some mentally disturbed person starts the engine and intentionally drives a truck into a large group of innocent, unsuspecting people, it becomes a weapon of mass destruction. This is becoming the chosen method of inflicting the maximum harm and instilling the greatest fear, since any and every truck becomes a potential weapon, and trucks are absolutely everywhere. The truck murders in France and Germany were brought to a halt with guns.
The world is full of potentially murderous weapons, from suicide vests to baseball bats to swords and knives and any explosive substance in an innocent-looking tin can. In the wrong hands they can all kill many people. A gun in the right hands would prevent such homicide, as was the case in the 2015 cartoon-competition incident in Texas. A gun in the right hands could have prevented the Bataclan murders in France, and in many other cases.
The one real danger is not a gun or any other potential weapon. The potential danger to us all is a person with a mind that is mentally disturbed. This was clearly exemplified in the recent murders at Fort Lauderdale Airport.
The world must recognise and treat mental illness as an absolute priority.
