Hungarian ambassador Dr Peter Jakab will introduce the film himself while snacks and refreshments will be served by the Hungarian Embassy after the screening.
Suitable for people aged 15 up, “White God”, directed by Kornel Mundruczo, is a strong and inspiring tale of the love between a 13- year-old girl, Lili, and her half-breed ‘mongrel’ dog, Hagen. Lili brings him when she comes to live with her estranged father. But her father refuses to keep him at home, and abandons him on the streets. Lili is heartbroken, but cannot find him. Hagen is caught and sold to a dog-fighter, who teaches him how to fight and kill. After that, Hagen becomes a killer dog, and soon gangs up with 250 dogs in the city, to wreak revenge on the humans who had treated them badly. The film raises many questions, especially about inequalities, not just between men and animals, but between men of different race and breeding.
“White God” won the Un Certain Regard award at the prestigious Cannes Festival, with Hagen, the dog, taking home an unprecedented Palm Dog Award. The film has been screened at various festivals around the world, and was Hungary’s entry for the Oscars in 2014.
