The law against a dangerous social cancer

Re: “Cancer of normalised corruption”(Opinion, March 17)

In the process of fighting corruption, Asian countries can, indeed, help themselves by creating a stronger regional legal framework against corruption. However, it should not be forgotten that all 10 Asean countries are already parties to a universal legal instrument in this field, which has been in force since 2005.
The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) is a unique tool containing a comprehensive legal response in 71 articles to a most serious global problem.
181 States are parties to UNCAC. According to it, corruption is a threat to the stability and security of societies, undermining the institutions and values of democracy, ethical values and justice and jeopardising sustainable development and the rule of law.
UNCAC’s good faith implementation at the regional and global levels could significantly contribute to preventing and mitigating a dangerous social cancer.
