When a rose is not just a rose

Sisley unviels the Izia Fragrance and the remarkable story behind it

A bouguet of beautiful roses in a bottle, Sisley’s Izia – the newest fragrance from the d’Ornano family – was introduced recently in the posh Author’s Wing of the Oriental Bangkok, suited decked out in the crimson buds.
Rujitr Suthanaseriporn hosted the gathering, at which Ronadech “Nam” Wongsaroj sang romantic songs and guests included Nicolas Chesnier, Sisley Asia-Pacific director, Somsak Chalachol, Supee Pongpanit, Suriyon Sriornrathaikul, Saraichat Jirapaet, Parva Nakasai and Praewpetch Kankiatkul.
Pronounced Ijia, Izia is the Polish diminutive for Isabelle, and it was Isabelle d’Ornano who ensured that the lounge was filled with the beautiful scent of roses as guests mingled.
There were also the heady perfumes of cedar, hydrangea, honeysuckle and wisteria, but the unmistakable allure of roses freshly cut predominated. There was the bittersweet feeling that accompanies any encounter with roses – the blossoms and their aroma will linger no more than two weeks.
It was in Paris in May one year, just as the roses were at their most enchanting, that perfume maker Amandine Clerc-Marie received a bouquet of rose buds from d’Ornano, with a note asking her to match the unique scent when they came into flower.
Clerc-Marie studied the blossoms carefully through their short lives, learning every evocative nuance and mastering their natural harmonies so that she could faithfully transpose the authentic scent into a liquid fragrance.
The perfume begins with sophisticated top notes of white bergamot accentuated with hints of freesia and tea, emphasised with aldehydes. With its lemony, sparkling facets, pink peppercorn subtly enhances the uplifting bergamot.
Like the lifelike single rose found in Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s beloved children’s tale “The Little Prince”, Izia reveals a lemony floral heart with refreshing notes of pear, exalted by fresh petals of jasmine, peony and lily of the valley.
In the base notes, the rose accord is highlighted by enveloping, powdery and very feminine musk. The woody warmth of cedar provides structure, while dry a down-note of amber transcribes a modern sensuality.
The magnificent bouquet is captured in a bottle with rose tints and golden facets designed by Polish sculptor Bronislaw Krzysztof.
Izia fragrance is available at all Sisley’s counters in leading department stores.
