Nadech becomes an alien

Fan meetings aside, South Korean TV dramas are also booming here in Thailand and Thai TV channels are snapping up several hit TV series to adapt for a local remake.

The latest project was recently announced by Broadcast Thai Television company’s Channel 3 and it’s a remake of “The Man Who Came from the Star”.

The series is a huge hit not only in Korea but also China and across Asia and turned young actor Kim Soo-Hyun into an Asian superstar for his portrayal of the alien Do Min-joon.

The fantasy romantic comedy is centred on Do Min-Joon who landed on Earth 400 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty period and can’t return home because of the communication problem with his planet. Immortal, he possesses a near-perfect appearance and enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed. Working as a professor, he also has rather than a cynical view of human beings until he meets actress Cheon Song-yi (Jun Ji-Hyun) and falls in love.

The two protagonists are very strong characters, as they have to be convincing both in terms of romance and comedy. So Thai fans have somewhat mixed feelings about the news that Thai heartthrob Nadech Kugimiya will take the role of Do Min-joon.

The perfect choice for Cheon Song-yi would be superstar Patcharapha “Aum’”Chaichua but she’s under contract to Channel 7.

Three actresses from Channel 3 are said to be under consideration foe the part –Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund, Kimberley Anne Tiamsiri and Peeranee “Matt” Kongthai.

Recent remakes of South Korean dramas include “Coffee Prince,” “Autumn in My Heart” and “Full House and the still-in-production “Secret Garden” and “Princess Hours”.
