Hail to the hallyu

More than 12,000 K-pop fans packed into the space outside the entrance to the Show DC mega-complex on Rama 9 Road on Tuesday night to watch and listen to girl groups, AOA and Apink, boy band CNBlue and Psy, who took the world by storm with his 2012 single “Gangnam Style”.

The event was part of the five-day Songkran event organised to mark the opening of the new entertainment and shopping venue.
AOA, an acronym for Ace of Angels, was the first to come out on stage. Demurely attired in pink mini-dresses with white collar and cuffs, Park Choa, Shin Jimin, Seo Yuna, Shin Hyejeong, Kwon Mina, Kim Seolhyun, and Kim Chanmi opened with their first two singles, “Excuse Me” and “Bing Bing” from the studio album, “Angels’ Knock” released in January 2017.

The girls then greeted Thai fans before segueing into “Heart Attack”, an electro pop number on which Jimin raps and followed up with “Like a Cat”, an upbeat track with elements of rock, plus the pure pop “Miniskirt”.
The hot and humid weather, not to mention the crowding, took its toll on many fans, who were carried out by the security staff and received first aid to revive them.

After a 15-minute break, Apink came out dressed in school-like uniforms to perform “Only One” from their third studio album “Pink Revolution”. The girls continued with “Cause You’re My Star” and “Remember.”
Fans screamed when the girl group took them back in time with hit singles, “Mr Chu”, “Luv”, and “No No No”, and joined in happily for the chorus of the latter, singing “Don’t be sad no no no, You’re not alone no no no.”
The screams reached a crescendo when Jung Yong-hwa, Lee Jong-hyun, Kang Min-hyuk, and Lee Lung Shin of CNBlue walked on the stage and kicked off their set with Brit rock-style number “Can’t Stop” and pop rock song “Cinderella”.

The band continued with “Love Light” and “It’s You”, which fans sang along with them, and rocked them in “You’re So Fine” before ending its show with new single “Between Us”.
The show came to an end with a set by Psy who stimulated fans with a set of dance songs, including the funky “Napal Baji”, “Gentleman” and “Daddy.” He closed out the show with “Gangnam Style”, which has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the most “liked” video on YouTube.
