This year, 66 Optimist sailors will join the event, many of them repeat competitors from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, Kuwait and France who warmed up with the Thailand National Optimist team during the recent Songkran International Regatta.
Duncan Gregor of Hong Kong took individual first place. Muhammad Daniel Kei from Singapore and Muhammed Khaidir Bin Mohd Zahawi from Malaysia came in the second and third places, while Thailand’s Panwa Boonnak earned a respectable sixth and will be looking for a better position in the upcoming Hua Hin regatta.
“This regatta was a great opportunity for the international sailors to test the conditions of the Gulf of Thailand before the world championships and we look forward to welcoming them again in July. Beautiful sunny days and superb winds of up to 20 knots made the four-day sailing event a true challenge for these young sailors,” said Tom Whitcraft, president of the Optimist World Championship organising committee.
“The Optimist World Championship organising team promises a great week of racing for the 62 countries with approximately 300 Optimist sailors who land on our shores in July”.
